Your Knee (Pain) Loving Care!

Whether it’s caused by soreness after exercise or chronic inflammation for someone who is older, knee pain is one condition that seems to affect all ages.

There is some irony here: exercise may be to blame for someone’s knee problem, but exercise may be good for treating what aches you.

Knee pain can be anything from mild discomfort to outright intense discomfort when you twist your knee in the wrong way, fall on it, or bump it. There can be potential  damage to some of its many parts, including the bone, the ligaments, muscles and cartilage. The knee is like a guidepost for the many things legs can do, from bending to standing up. You can’t walk or turn without the knee working properly.

Pain in the knee is one of the more common aches and pains, and most people, ironically, will be affected in some way at least once in their lives. Sprains and strains occur when knee tissues become disjointed, or you stretch in an uncomfortable or awkward way.

Think of your knee before exercising

Knee problems could begin while exercising because you didn’t stretch or prepare well. Often knee problems will go away after a little while, but some ailments require treatment to the knee joint, known as the meniscus.


Arthritis, osteoarthritis and arthralgia can impact the knee, which is inflammation or pain within the joint itself. Osteoarthritis is among the most common chronic joint conditions, affecting about 27 million people in the U.S., mostly people over 65 years. Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage breaks down, causing bones to rub directly against each other and triggering pain and swelling.

Surprising knee conditions

There are other ailments that may begin in other parts of the body and may impact the knees as well, such as rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, and gout. Some may be a surprise: gout is often inflammation linked to the feet. That’s not necessarily the case. The knee could be impacted as well.

Surprising fix for knee pain

Exercise.  It may seem contrary to your thinking – when you are in some pain – but exercise for the knee is one of the best things you can do to thwart potential worse problems.  Vigorous exercise isn’tnecessary by any means. But long periods without moving the knee should be avoided. When someone has osteoarthritis, for example, prolonged sitting can produce a stiff, painful joint.

Lose Weight

While weight loss and diet are important for knee pain, other techniques are important, too, such as massage, and aromatherapy preparations, balneotherapy and water exercise.

Natural treatment

Peppermint and eucalyptus oil can reduce discomfort in patients with inflamed joints.

Another natural treatment for joint pain and stiffness is homemade capsaicin cream, which can help improve range of motion in the knee. Heat an cold compresses, acupuncture, yoga, Tai Chai and massage, are also good remedies to help alleviate knee pain.

Herbal remedies

To get further relief, more and more people with arthritis are seeking a natural approach by using herbal remedies.

Among the herbs linked to alleviating knee pain

Duhuo Jisheng Tang could reduce joint pain, swelling and improve the range of activities and the quality of life in patients and knee osteoarthritis, said the Chinese Journal of Experimental Traditional Medical Formulae.   In another study, a four-week therapy with the Chinese herbal preparation reduced pain and stiffness and improved physical functioning in patients with osteoarthritis. It was less effective in treating flaccidity and aversion to cold, according to Chinese Medicine journal.

Ru Xiang, also called frankincense, or Boswellia carterii – Fragrant Milk – is known for relieving pain and swelling and promoting tissue regeneration. There are many variations of Boswellia. In traditional Ayuvedic medicine, the Boswellia gum has been used to treat many conditions. Boswellia serrate is known for treating arthritic and other inflammatory conditions.

Cat’s claw (uncaria tomentosa) , originally from vines in South and Central America, is known for anti-inflammatory properties. Researchers found in a study that the supplement reduced joint swelling and pain by more than 50 percent compared to a placebo, according to the Arthritis Foundation.

The Ho Family Dit Da Jow formula, which includes about 30 herbs, has been used for pain relief related to arthritis, tissue strains and soreness. Some of the individual herbs in the formula, which works in a synergistic fashion, include Chuan Xiong.
